A 3,809 majority puts Fred Smith back on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC)

Liberal Democrat Fred Smith was returned as councillor for Willerby & Kirk Ella on the night of the General Election. With both Jon Neal PPC, for Haltemprice & Howden & Denis Healy PPC for Hull North not succeeding in their attempts to oust the sitting MPs, it was very gratifying for those who worked so hard for Fred to see him win by such a huge margin.

Many Lib Dem supporters and voters have been made dizzy by the speed of events in Parliament. It has been a big surprise not to say shock, to discover that we seem to have more in common with the Conservatives than with Labour. In any event the Liberal Democrats are now part of the government and in a position to pass some Liberal Democrat policies into Law, albeit in a modified state.

Jon Neal PPC meets Haltemprice & Howden voters at Cottingham Hustings

"Hopes for a better future after the 1997 election when Labour came to power, have been completely dashed," said Jon Neal in his opening speech at the Cottingham Hustings. "The gap between the rich and poor has become much bigger and the biggest boom for the last 60 years has been followed by the biggest bust."

Apology demanded from David Davis

Father Oliver Coss, an Anglican priest from Cottingham, has asked for an apology from former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis, the Conservative candidate for Haltemprice and Howden. (Yorkshire Post 27/4/10) This request for an apology arose from an astonishing confrontation during Cottingham Market on Thursday 15th of April. Mr Davis was campaigning there when Fr Coss approached him with a personal invitation to a hustings arranged by the Cottingham Churches. Earlier written invitations had been made through the Conservative Headquarters in Willerby, but Mr Davis' agent had informed Fr Coss that Mr Davis could not attend. Fr Coss, accompanied by the Vicar Father Paul Smith, hoped a personal invitation might persuade Mr Davis to change his mind.

Jon Neal Lib Dem PPC calls for extension to Welton Primary School

Parents have been promised by Labour they can have the school of their choice for their children. This is a promise which has not been kept for many Brough residents. There is a serious shortage of primary school places in the rapidly growing village. Jon Neal proposed a way forward in an interview with Vicky Johnson for Look North (Tuesday 27th of April).

Clegg Scores Second Win in Party Leaders Debate

An average of five polls conducted immediately after the Sky TV Leaders Election debate on Thursday night put Nick Clegg as the winner, with all instant polls showing him ahead of Gordon Brown. After the Foreign Affairs-led debate from Bristol dominated by issues like Iraq, immigration and climate change, Nick Clegg won 3 of the 5 polls on the night, building on his position after the first debate.

Nick Clegg Storms First Ever Party Leaders Debate

The polls following the first ever Party Leaders General Election debate on ITV are showing that Nick Clegg has won a convincing victory over David Cameron and Gordon Brown. The debate was the first ever Leaders debate during a UK General Election campaign, and the pollsters are giving it as a big victory for Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats.
